Question
Marriage > from anonymous4 answers
I'm 24, and I have a huge binder that is filled with pictures of wedding dresses, rings, sample invitations, etc. I subscribe to every bridal magazine, and order a lot of "sample favors", etc. for free from internet sites...
..
But I have no fiance...Or even a boyfriend...
..
Do you think this is weird?..

Maybe you've missed your calling. Maybe you should work as a wedding planner?..
Sounds like you'd enjoy the job...
Yeah, it is weird to be planning a wedding when you haven't even got a groom. And when you do start dating a guy -- if 100 bridal magazines are at your house, you're going to freak him out. Plus, I worry that you want to get married so badly that you'll take whoever comes along. You need a new hobby -- or a new career...

I do.....
..
...think that it's weird, that is, and a little bit sad. You're focusing so much energy on a wedding that isn't even a possibility right now, let alone a pending reality...Instead you could be advancing in your career, becoming a black-belt in karate, learning how to make authentic Thai food, perfecting your golf swing. Teaching an illiterate adult how to read, or mentoring an inner-city kid, or feeding the hungry, or helping terminally ill patients to die with dignity. Knitting blankies for cold, furless cats in shelters...well, you get the idea. ..
..
Or -- here's a radical thought -- you could be dating, and at least progressing towards making your dream wedding a reality...
..
Even if we give this the most positive spin possible, and say that you're going to be utterly prepared for when you do get married, I think you're setting yourself up for a ginormous fall. What's going to happen when your wedding doesn't -- and it won't -- turn out like a picture in your binder?..

Our society paints weddings as a fairytale experience - prince charming and happily ever after. Every little girl who ever imagined herself a princess with shimmering gown and jeweled tiara most likely imagined herself on her wedding day in much the same way. Unfortunately this is pure fantasy and there is a life that follows the wedding. I think that possibly this dream/fantasy is partly responsible for the high divorce rate. Real life can never live up to this fairytale if that is what your dream has been. And it sounds like quite possibly all your obsessive collecting of wedding paraphenalia is part of this girlhood fantasy of happily ever after. Focusing on the event instead of the real life meaning of what a marriage truly is...

it seems a bit weird in the sense that it's unusual, but it doesn't necessarily seem like a problem. ..
..
You love weddings -- you love the style, the decisions involved, the rituals, the bridesmaid dresses, whatever. Okay, it's your hobby. Some guys are obsessed with the New York Yankees. ..
..
So unless your obsession with the make-believe, glossy-magazine version of love and relationships is actually getting in the way of your having a real-life relationship, then what's the harm?..
..
(I guess it could get in the way if you have a potential boyfriend over to your house and he takes one look at your crazy wedding binder and freaks out... but you seem like an otherwise sane, reasonable person who just loves a good photo shoot of a model in a gown.)..
