Here's that question

When I was in undergrad, I took a Psychology of Marriage and Relationships class...In it we learned anything from sex to the subject of being in a relationship in old age...I felt that it was probably the best class I have ever taken...It gave me lots of insight into my own relationships as well as those of others(although I'm far from an expert)...In fact I loved this class so much, I almost switched from a Comp Sci major to a Psych. (I only have a minor in psych)..I learned how to deal with angry partners, angry parents, children, etc...I also learned how to show other men that it's ok to show that you love someone and not lose their respect.....
..
I know that a class is no substitute for experience, and I've had plenty of that too, but I feel like this class was a good springboard into the loving relationship I have now with my girlfriend (soon to be fiance').....
..
So my question is: Have you ever taken a class on relationships or gone to therapy?..If so has it helped? If not, would you go?..I'm curious to see if anyone else has had such experiences...

I have been in couples therapy, and although it was an excruciating experience to undergo, it was also valuable. I am fully convinced that "the unexamined life is not worth living," so I thoroughly applaud all efforts to learn more about oneself, one's partner, and the trends and trajectories of relationship dynamics, both on a personal and a psychological or sociological level...I'm also just fascinated in things like the history of marriage and family life and sexual mores. Wouldn't it be great if courses like that could be made available through adult ed or other community venues, and not just to matriculated students? Hmmm...I feel an idea shaping up here...let's start baffldU! Dibs on a tenure-track full professorship!..

No, my university didn't have that class. We had a class called "Sex & Society" but that wasn't a psych class, that was a history and sociology class. It was interesting. We did a condom taste test for our HIV project. BTW, passion fruit was by far, the best...

I've often felt that academia isn't really wired to help us deal with real life in many of it's hues. I think every high school senior should get a money management class as well as conflict resolution and relationship class, and let's not forget sex ed, and by sex ed I mean what they teach 15 yr olds in Holland & Sweden not the bogus stuff they teach here...

Woah a condom taste test, our university is certainly not so liberal. I've never had the opportunity to do such courses, but I'd definitely be interested in trying them...

I took psych 101, and aside from the normal clinical terms and conditions, it definitely had enough about things like defense mechanisms, and nature vs nurture and personality types to contribute to my wisdom about people and relationships. Not exactly a class based primarily around pair bonding, but it definitely helped...

Also, I've been to therapy for getting over being dumped hard by my long-term girlfriend, but I didn't find that helped. I understand why the did this, but when I need answers/solutions in how to fix my particular problem, and they bounce it back with "well, how do you think you could solve this problem"... not really constructive. What I needed (and to some degree still need) is someone who knows lots of girls, either to get explain their reasoning, or just to play matchmaker for me...
